First off, note that your $Subject is wrong. You said "smtp", which
in Postfix terms refers to the client side, smtp(8). Your actual
issue seems to be on the server side, smtpd(8).

So the first question here, since we already read ahead to find out
you're talking about smtpd, is this: why did you choose Cyrus SASL?
What are you using for imapd?

Even if you're not using Dovecot for IMAP, it's easier to set up a
SASL-only Dovecot to handle server-side SASL authentication. If you
*are* using Dovecot for IMAP, you have gotten confused by a bad
HOWTO.

If you're using Courier IMAP, I'd recommend Courier authdaemond as
the backend for Cyrus SASL. There's no need for saslauthd in either
of these cases.

Note that smptd != smtpd. Not having a Debian to check on, I can't
say for sure, but this could be a problem.
