I know that courier did not used to have a shared folder's option, this
is why I originally moved to dovecot. I've also read, here
<http://wiki.qmailtoaster.com/index.php/Replacing_Courier_IMAP_with_Dovecot_IMAP>,
that courier chokes on large mailboxes, but I never experienced that. It
always performed well for me.
