I've followed the instructions on the archwiki [1] and my configuration files are exactly as explained there, except that I have *not* set neither home_mailbox nor mail_spool_directory, but instead I've setted
mailbox_command = /usr/bin/procmail since I use procmail to sort my mail. "mail -s test renato" though silently fails (renato is my username) - i.e. mail never gets passed to procmail.
