OK, I wondered if this was part of it because I did see that it couldn't pass the connection over to smtpd and would require the other host to try again. I guess I wasn't expecting to get alerts to that process, or else was expecting an error message that sounded less severe -- "host passed postscreen tests, asking to retry later" perhaps.
