Well, it's Debian -- that's pretty close :-)
I saw this problem a couple of years ago, fixed it (but don't remember how), but then an update to my server caused it to reappear.
I'll see if I can find anything interesting in there, and write it down. There seen to be numerous Debian/Dovecot problems...
But I don't think that's it -- some of these have rhost data, and some don't. OTOH, something I don't understand is doing this,
