I thought it would be better to spare the list of a few hundred needless lines of diagnostics when I was able to accurately describe the problem in 3. Perhaps I could have expanded "didnt seem to work" to "despite <> being present in my smtp_sasl_password_maps table, when a bounce is sent, no suitable userid+password is chosen for sasl authentication".
