On a test box in Postfix 2.5.5 I tried putting myhost.domain.tld in

/etc/postfix/myhostname.cf in main.cf.

Perhaps surprisingly, Postfix actually behaves as documented.
Where does Postfix documentation say that myhostname understands
file names?

It doesn't. Was just trying to communicate what I already did do; right wrong or indifferent to the facts contained in the documentation.

Since this does not work, is there an available option to move
myhostname out of main.cf and into another file name or type?

To set a fixed Postfix name, set the right hostname in main.cf, or
set the right hostname in the kernel. If you need to change the
Postfix name constantly, then that is an indication of illegitimate
activities.

No illegitimate activities, I hope! My question stemmed from trying to devise a way to fully abstract configuration of main.cf for use in internal documentation of how Postfix is configured for my servers, without using pseudo example or syntax.
