in the default setup, @localhost gets "completed" as
@localhost.$mydomain (See append_at_mydomain). Putting both localhost
and localhost.$mydomain yields some safety.

By default, @host gets completed to @host.$mydomain. and if you change
append_at_mydomain, then you need to fix pieces of software that would
generate addresses of the form <f...@host> (without a domain part).

This is different from "localhost", because many pieces of software are
known to generate <f...@localhost> style addresses. and also because
"localhost", even if it doesn't have a dot, is unambiguous.
