Incidentally, I have found one difference between the two machines which
may be relevant. "Man exit" on this machine shows "rc", which is the
Plan 9 shell, whatever that is. On the one which works it just shows
"exit", with nothing about Plan 9 or rc.

There is a Debian package called rc but I don't have it installed.

I have  tried a different shell (zsh) and an older version of postfix,
without effect. LANG is the same on both machines.
