Well I am using FreeBSD 6.3 and not solaris. Is it quite possible the same thing would have been done on BSD as well?

Seems the socket used by trivial-rewrite is down or unresponsive, and when you restart, it is once again available which is why the problem 'goes away'. Just a guess.
