Ok, I've seen a couple of this on the mailinglist earlier. But as I
understand, each case is pretty much unique.
The case is: We're hosting a lot of linux-boxes around Norway, spread on
different locations, working as library servers. Everyone running
postfix. And we seldom have anything to do with the rest of the network
or the Internet connection...
We're running postfix 2.4.10 at every location.
In this case, I'm pretty sure the problem lies at the gateway/firewall
at one of the ends. But I need to know which end, and preferably also
exactly what is wrong. Because I will have to tell some IT-dude at one
of the locations what they need to change, and where. Or if I could
change something in postfix/linux which may solve the problem.
I'm not good at reading tcpdump output, so that's why I write to you
guys... Hoping someone will spot the error. :)
This problem is when a mail is sent from the server called NotBib, to
the server called BamBib, located at two different places. Email from
and to other locations seems to work ok, but I haven't tried too many.
Small emails is sent correctly, but larger mails (about 1500 bytes and
upwards, I think?) will not deliver... It takes a minute or two, and
then I receive "conversation with NotBib(..and the rest of the domain)
timed out while sending end of data -- message may be sent more than once".
I have tried sending a mail with a size of 1589 from NotBib to BamBib,
with debugging turned on inside main.cf on both sides. I have also
recorded the transmission with tcpdump, as specified on www.postfix.org.
Didn't want to risk anything by attaching the logs to this mail. ;)
All logs can be found at the URL:
http://postfix.jorno.net/2009_04_22-BamBib-NotBib/
Output from sender:
NotBib-mail.log (the relevant portion from mail.log)
NotBib.tcpdump (output from "tcpdump -w
NotBib.DUMP.postfix.from.BamBib.tcpdump -s 0 -i eth0 host 159.130.66.44")
NotBib.postconf (output from "postconf -n")
Output from receiver:
BamBib-mail.log (the relevant portion from mail.log)
BamBib.tcpdump (output from "tcpdump -w
BamBib.DUMP.postfix.from.NotBib.tcpdump -s 0 -i eth0 host
notweb.notodden.folkebibl.no")
BamBib.postconf (output from "postconf -n")
Please shout out if I need to include more documentation or logging. I
will provide whatever necessary :)
Kind regards from Norway,
Jørn Odberg
