error message still present - but the issue seems to be resolved.
flooded my mailbox with command mail and did imap lists simultaneously.

Are you running IMAP with the file storage accessed via NFS?
Because that's one of the things that will have Mark Crispin spinning in
his grave - he considered it the worst ways to do things.
And it will explain your file-system problems.
