There are also reasonable grounds for a backup MX, my domain has two MX
hosts, one where the mail is actually delivered, and another that relays
to the primary. The primary is in Australia while the secondary is
almost antipodal in the UK.

The reason is that I've seen cases where for some prolonged time a few
mainstream (Proofpoint, for example) sending MX hosts were unable to
reach the primary for mysterious BGP or other network-related reasons,
and having a backup MX host that can be reached when needed helps to
reduce the odds of missed email.
