    Hi,

I was wondering - is it possible to bounce e-mails for
non-existent addresses when using a catchall?

Define your terms clearly and you willhave a better time finding answers.

What do you mean by "non-existent addresses" in a context where a "catchall" exists.

As I said on a previous answer to my question, what I want is this:

I want that mail sent to users who do not have a valid address (like when they are not on ldap) to bounce back, like it happens by default, but I’d also like these mail to be delivered to an specific mailbox.

As you said, if I use catchall, these addresses would be valid. But I’d like the senders to get a bounce email so that they know they sent the mail to an address that doesn’t exist or that the destination mailbox wasn’t reached.

Is it a bit more clear now?

Best,

Francis

Hi Francis

it may be technically possible some way to deliver and bounce the same message, but it is a really bad idea. The best practice is to either accept or reject the message in the smtp session. If you reject it you won't have the email. If you accept it then you should avoid bouncing it later. Otherwise your server could become a source of backscatter and end up getting on block lists. Spam routinely uses forged sender addresses. If you reject it at the smtp level, then the forged sender is not impacted. If you accept and then bounce it, you're bouncing to someone who likely did not send the message.

John
