I don't see what you mean by "two completely separate programs".

with courier, you use: maildrop as the LDA, authdaemon as the auth server.

with dovecot, you use dovecot LDA as the LDA and dovecot auth as the
auth server.

AFAIK, sieve doesn't check mysql (at this time).
