Yes, I despised KDE 4 for the first few revisions. I don't think it
was until 4.4 or so that
it became tolerable for me.

IMHO the way Linux should work is that you should be able to run your
preferred desktop, X-window system on
your favorite distro. If you're truly a veteran user, you should be
capable of pulling that off without too many bumps
and wrinkles. I say should because I've tried running a few different
X-Window Managers a few times without much look.
Granted my troubles were mostly due to my ignorance of said X-win
mgrs. and my lack of interest and time to
make them as or more usable for me than the default desktop such as KDE / Gnome.
