Last time this happened to me it was because I was trying out ldap. 
Apperently I don't really know the reason behind it but my machine wouldn't 
boot properly it would pause for a long time while trying to start a particular 
process.  Often ctrl-c the process but ut would pause again on the next one. 

Maybe you installed something and you may have misconfigured it and its only 
now that you see the side effects.
