Regardless of the storage technology you use, if you have a single point of 
failure, it will be quite traumatic when Murphy pays it a visit.  Even if you 
go 
for SSDs (faster, but more expensive $/GB), you would still need at least two 
devices (for a RAID 1 setup) to avoid a similar experience.
