Ubuntu has come a long way since then. I've tried all Ubuntu incarnations
since 5.10 except for the beta of 7.10 -- I'm typing this mail from an Ubuntu
7.04 machine with backports (from Gutsy) installed. I also am of the opinion
that Ubuntu can be easy to use for a non-techie. Kubuntu even more.

I'm looking forward to trying out the next Ubuntu version when it gets release
next month. Apparently, a lot of Desktop PC-related enhancements are being
worked on.

I also have a number of Ubuntu "servers" running in VMs. So far, they're all
working out ok.

I've tried RH and Slackware, as well. I guess I just got comfortable with
Ubuntu for now. So far, everything I need is there.

Complaints with Ubuntu so far:

1. I've tried a couple of IBM Thinkpads, and experienced hw incompatibilities.
In one unit, I had to turn off acpi.

2. Modem-support. Look in their bugtracker -- it seems modem-related bugs are
not a priority -- especially winmodems. So far, I haven't gotten a notebook's
built-in modem to run in ubuntu. I've attempted this on 1 Asus, 2 IBM and 1 HP
laptops. Good thing I still have an old external serial modem.

Subject: Re: [plug] Ubuntu...why do you use it?

I've used Ubuntu 4.10 as desktop before but I believe it's not that stable as a
server, that is why I shifted to Debian, nowadays I only RHEL/CentOS because it
is what my work entails.
