With the software mixer enabled, mplayer applies the selected volume itself instead of relying on the sound card. This is implicitly enabled for all audio outputs except for those that have (alsa) appended to their name or PulseAudio. Using these without the software mixer causes the system volume to be changed (if I instead upstream's answer correctly). Regards -- Sebastian Ramacher
