This term's logic seminars will be mainly devoted to work in progress.
The first, this Thursday at 4pm (note slightly earlier time) in the
graduate common room of the Faculty, will be Tim Button on "Brains in
vats and Skolem's paradox". It is likely to be relevant to Part II Math
Logic and Metaphysics as well as graduate students. Abstract below.

Abstract: Hilary Putnam’s anti-sceptical BIV argument first occurred to
him when ‘thinking about a theorem in modern logic, the
“Skolem–Löwenheim Theorem”.’ My aim – inspired by Putnam, Thomas
Tymoczko and Adrian Moore – is to explore this connection between BIV
scepticism and Skolem’s Paradox. In particular, I want: to show
something of the probable origins of the BIV argument; to show that two
sceptical positions – skolemism and BIV scepticism – can be defeated by
similar arguments; and to briefly explain how these arguments relate to
Putnam’s model-theoretic arguments.
