I second KVM. I've been running it on Ubuntu Lucid with LVM managing storage for about a year now and it has worked very well for me. When I've needed them, I've even had assorted versions of Windows and MS-DOS running on it. However, I can't comment on native Linux GUI management tools, because I'm happy with virsh on the command line.

This was my next thought.

Same question applies though: can someone suggest a good (cheap) mobo/CPU combo? I'm out of touch when it comes to CPUs these days. I'd say I have a budget of around £100 for mobo and CPU, on the assumption that will get me something with virtualisation support and better performance than the P4D it would replace.

If I go with KVM, will that work on top of software RAID? Ie I create a RAID10 software array at the host O/S level and create VMs on top of it? (That's something that vSphere can't do.) If not then I'm going to need suitable RAID hardware suggestions as well. (To be clear: I don't specifically need RAID10, I just want to make sure that the loss of any one of my 4 HDDs won't cause me data loss in any of my VMs.)

I'm happy with cmdline management.
