Thanks for the link Iain. The HSE guidance seems very sensible and debunks a lot of the mythology that has grown up around this topic. I've found two really helpful PDFs there: Maintaining portable and transportable electrical equipment http://www.hse.gov.uk/pubns/books/hsg107.htm and Maintaining portable electric equipment in low-risk environments http://www.hse.gov.uk/pubns/indg236.htm It's pretty clear from these that a lot of people are going way over the top on PAT testing. It reminds me of the days when I was involved with quality issues on defence products. The amount of BS that people talked about what the standards required was mind boggling. If AQAP-1 had contained everything that people said it did, it would have occupied a shelf 20 feet long. It was actually less than half an inch thick.
