So bind is an option, but overkill. Should I install that on my
desktop or are there better options?


I'd go with bind personally, as it's pretty good, and not hard to configure. You can always use it with the dlz patch to store your zones in a MySQL database:
http://bind-dlz.sourceforge.net/

PowerDNS is pretty good, though we've run into a couple of slaving bugs.
