Also if you don't need the newest software, give debian squeeze a go,  it uses 
gnome2 and should be supported for some time yet.

You may also want to try XFCE, which is close to what Gnome 2 was a few
releases ago. I suggested this to Stuart Lonnen, who may already be
trying XUbuntu 11.04 at this time.
