If your using gnome 3 install the gnome tweek tool (avalible from all good 
repo's) and you can switch the desktop icons back on (though they only appear 
after the first app has been launched) and yes it's AMAZINGLY minimal!

 which may be of assistance. Have also been trying Gnome 3 on OpenSuSE from 
http://gnome3.org/tryit.html via a LiveCD - the desktop was so minimalist I 
didn't notice that it had started ! Phil
