If under Preferences/Advanced untick the box "Importing --- Copy items to 
iPhoto Library" then iPhoto will put the photos in any folder you say when 
importing.

Try f-stop a more linux program, most programs that runs under X in linux can 
be re-compiled to run under X on MAC  but some requare some work by the user to 
get working google macports
