Hi Stewart.
On Windows I used Picasa and found it quite good.
A version for Linux has been released recently if you want to.

Otherwise I use gqview (but does not create any picture list!).

We currently keep all our family photos on a Mac (backed up of course) and I
use iPhoto for downloading and manipulating them.

I think iPhoto is a great piece of software and it has served us well over the
years but despite all the shiny coolness there's one thing that has always
bugged me. I hate the way it locks the photos in to it's own little storage
method.

I know how to get the photos out but I much prefer the idea of me having my
folder of photos that I can access from different computers with different
programs should I so wish (i.e. photos stored on a networked drive).

The things I would miss from iPhoto is easily importing and adding to
collections, browsing photos, basic image manipulation, photo resizing for
uploading/emailing and slideshows.

Any recommendations?

Cheers,

Stewart
