nothing is future proof but backwards compatibility is pretty well 
guaranteed - this comes to you from an AMD XP2100 mobile CPU for example 
which seems to work happily with W7, Ubuntu, etc etc.

In my opinion processor power etc of PCs long ago left the rest of the 
machine far behind, especially the hard disk. Many of these go at 5400 
rpm aka 90 Hz (not even kHz let alone GHz !) so you're still staring at 
the thing for 1m30s + while it boots.

Obviously the benchmarks of newer processors are faster, but unless 
you're a mathematical modeller or making a CGI movie I doubt there's 
much practical significance to the typical user.
