Hi Stewart.
I've just bought a new laptop.
I went for Acer Aspire Timeline 4810TG.
Price around 700.
Long battery life, very light, 14" screen.
As far as I'm concerned it runs Open Office without any problem, but not had
the chance to put it to test properly.

Linux compatinbility: ouch!!
Not great, I'm afraid.
Issues with battery life, suspension/resume, special key for locking touchpad,
multitouch touchpad.

Apart from that, I'm happy.
The keyboard is not crammed, is not running too hot, the screen is fine.

Reading forums, it seems that Dell are best for Linux compatibility.

Good luck!
Michele

"Whats your budget?"

1000 absolute maximum, preferably less.

Sometimes the 'buy it cheap and chuck it away in a couple of years'
approach makes sense. However I remain to be convinced that it is
always the right thing to do when it comes to laptops. I spent close to
a grand on my Dell and six years later I'm still able to run the latest
MS Office version reasonably comfortably whilst also running email/web
apps at the same time.

I don't want silly top of the range gear but I don't want to spend a
couple of hundred quid on something that barely manages to run current
software speedily.

Stewart
