There is no need to tuch "network proxy" it is ok.   Perhaps we are using 
diffent versions of ubuntu can you remind me of the version you are useing?  
Perhaps the "network manager" has not been installed.   Open the software 
installer and do a serch for "Network manager" if it's not installed then 
install it. if it is installed click on preferences and that should tell you 
where it's been installed.

P.S. this is the sort of thing that could be lookat if we can find a place to 
have a meeting.  I would offer my bunglow in Upper Benefield  but it is a small 
bunglow and we don't have any spear chears also Upper Benefield is a bit far 
from Peterborough in the sticks.
