I see the problem the line in /etc/hosts
"127.0.1.1 richard-laptop.www.plusnet.com" is the problem. The domain name "richard-laptop.www.plusnet.com" is strange as normaily "www" would not be in the midel of the name. Also there is no short name "richard-laptop" so asoming that the laptop is not being used as a webserver try changing the line to: "127.0.1.1 richard-laptop.plusnet.com richard-laptop" but unbuntu automatily updates this file when you login and the network app makes a new network connection so what I would serjest is on the desktop look in the menus for "network" open that program and check that all the settings are right esp the domain name settings. I hope this points you in the right direction.
