Hi Gang

I bought a new SATA HDD from PC World, its a 1TB 7200 rpm beast for saving
all my DVDs to as Encoded AVI Files (saves wear and tear on the DVD discs
and me getting off my backside to get a dvd off the shelf, take it out of
its case and put it in the drive lol).

Anyway I have 2x 250Gb drives (sata also) already but they are fast filling
up, hence the new purchase.

(For those that are interested i use dvdbackup and avidemux in ubuntu)

I digress, anyway the problem is that the new drive is Sata 3.0Gbps by
default and cannot be seen by the on board sata ports (boot page just says
"no device", fortunately I have a box of trix that contains a sata PCI card,
which when plugged in and I boot with the 1TB drive in, it shows as the
drive being in bay 1 as a Samsung HD103SI and hangs when trying to display
the drive size (which the 2 250Gb drive report fine with no problem when
plugged into the onboard sata or on the raid card.)

Also rather annoyingly, I know the drive itself is OK because if I boot the
computer into Windows XP but before doing so, unplug the 1TB drive from the
sata raid card to bypass the raid boot screen that hangs, then plug it back
in either when the Windows Logo comes up, or just hot plug once at the
windows desktop (and preferrably in Disk Management so I can see whats going
on) I can get windows to see the 1TB device through the sata raid card, but
not via the onboard sata.

I read the samsung instruction manual and it says to download a utility to
set the drive to 1.5Gbps but it cannot see the drive when it is plugged into
the onboard sata ports and does not seem to acknowledge the sata-raid card
which is the only device that can "see" the 1TB HDD.

Ubuntu seems to detect the sata-raid card using lspci, but cannot see the
1TB sata drive attached to it, I only assume this is because of the 3.0Gbps
limitation, perhaps therefore I can only assume that Windows XP has a
special driver / ability to automatically set the card to work at whatever
speed needed to see the HDD, but again if I leave the drive plugged in and
reboot again, the sataraid controller hangs at the device detection screen.
So it doesnt work at boot but works once in windows?

I think I know fundamentally what the answer is, the drive needs to be in
1.5Gbps mode, but unlike the 2 250Gb drives I have which use a jumper
setting to do this, is seems the new drive requires this to be done through
software, which cannot see it because the on-board sata can't see it. How
irritating?

Anyone else had similar problems, how did you fix it, is there a "windows
utility" to set the hrad drive to 1.5Gpbs? (Its a Samsung HD103SI)

Regards

Richard
