Yoshiko,

I anticipate that the millipedes are coming from that garden and slipping under
the door. You could try to install brush sweeps on the door bottom. If they
reach to the threshold below and extend fully across the door, they’ll likely
prevent some – or many – from entering.

Reducing RH inside may not prevent more from entering, but it will hasten their
demise. They’ll simply desiccate more rapidly, and you may find their carcasses
closer to the exterior doors.

Consider deploying glue traps along the interior wall on either side of door.
You can make them less visible to people by hiding them behind or under a chair
or small table.

I doubt they’re attracted to library materials. Millipedes tend to feed upon
moist vegetable matter. They may wander onto books or other library materials,
but likely won’t cause damage unless the pages are wet. If that were the case,
you’d have far more significant problems there.

Best regards,
Rich

Hi Richard
Thanks.

As you mentioned, the basement of renewed library has access to the court with
garden.
The library tried to seal the access door but the invasion still continue. So
maybe we should find out every small space where the invaders can penetrate...

Keeping low RH can help to stop invasion?
I am wondering if they are not be attracted by the library materials (they do
not eat cellulose, adhesive, leather ecc. right?), whey they want to enter
inside building?

Thanks a lot
Yoshiko

Yoshiko,

Most often, millipedes invade a building via gaps beneath exterior doors or
around windows or non-sealed utility penetrations. They may also thrive indoors
in basements or other sites where is it humid and cool, such as within or
around sumps, floor drains that lead to dry wells or the soil, and in overly
watered plant pots. As Joel mentioned, rains may drive millipedes (and other
creatures) indoors.

I will appreciate your advices.
