Both buildings are 100 years old. The two buildings have different pest profiles. The Museum was locked down for a period of time ~5-6 months, with extremely limited human access. I was the only collections based staff member who was checking collections in the main facility. I did a complete walk through weekly, with the back of 2 staff from facilities - looking for both pests and water. At the main building I found an increase in cockroaches (Americanus), particularly in the lower levels. At least they were bolder. Maintenance paid attention to keeping drains filled, and maintained housekeeping. Our technician found an overall decrease in pests during that time. Roaches have upticked since food service has returned and the museum has opened up to both staff and to the public. At the off-site storage/lab area there was at least one person here each day. That person did a walk through. And the pest technician did his usual walk through. Prior to the pandemic we had tightened up the building significantly - improving door sweeps and overall repairs. There is maintenance cleaning on a daily basis under normal times. The only thing we generally find here is silverfish under the sinks. The tech found a decrease in silverfish during COVID, with a slight up-tick since we have had more people in the building. There was no rodent activity at all - not even evidence of chewing on the exterior of the building despite the amount of construction that is happening around the building. So they hunkered down too. I can see that. Booklice in general need a decent amount of humility at least in a micro climate setting. Otherwise those traps were pretty clean pre-pandemic through post-return. We run a tight ship, though we do tend to have booklice and mites (for some odd reason). The more I think about it, the more I think that human activity also disturbs things, and so during the work-from-home phase not much was moved around, so booklice tended to stay put. During the work-from-home phase of the pandemic we did see about a 33% reduction in trapped pests. What's weird is it is made up almost entirely of booklice. Once people started showing back up to work the numbers have increased to their pre-pandemic levels.
