I've thought about this since yesterday, if you're transferring the image files to reuse the SD cards then why not just carry enough SD cards to cover your expected shooting. Good quality thumb drives seem to cost almost as much as good quality SD cards. If you're actually doing a backup and carrying the thumb drives and keeping the images on the SD cards as well that's a different story, it matches your equipment.
