I do much the same, though I don't usually keep files on the SD cards, just laptop and external hard drive. On this trip I've run out of laptop space so now the two versions are those on the SD card and those copied through the laptop to the external. Like you, I would like to forget about the laptop, and I hope you come to a good solution to share with us.
