Most of the equipment KEH purchases comes in wholesale lots from
camera equipment dealers who took it on trade in at the retail
counter. Only a very minor percentage of it comes in from private
individuals. I know this because I asked the question of the owners at
both of the local pro-oriented large camera stores and also asked it
of the folks from KEH when they were here at a camera swap meet/trade
fair.

But yes: it's a business. To offer great equipment at low prices means
they have to obtain it at a low price. To get the best prices on your
unwanted equipment as a private seller, swap meets and private sales
to other enthusiasts are the way to go.
