FWIW I once filmed here:

and I asked one of the techs what the best method of hard drive security
was if (say) I was selling a computer 2nd hand. His answer was simple
and straightforward: take the hard drive out and destroy it by hammering
nails through the platters. That is apparently the only way to be 100% sure.
When I worked for the IBM PC company at Research Triangle Park in
Durham, NC they periodically collected up all the used, no longer wanted
hard-drives and made a big pile of them in one of the parking areas.
They hired a contractor with a large bulldozer to repeatedly run back
and forth across the pile. The residue was then scooped and sent to a
metal recycling facility to be melted down.
Not sure if that was paranoia or something to do with a Foreign Trade
Zone designation that allowed IBM to not pay import duties on
hard-drives until they were shipped out to customers. Probably both.
