Well, I took the drive to the local shop to see if they cold put in in a new enclosure. We opened the Mybook case and took out the drive only to find that some component on the drives circuit board had apparently caught on fire. There was a small soot spot around a few small holes on the circuit board, and a little heat deformation. Apparently something on the other side of the circuit board, facing the drive itself, burned up. We tried hooking it up a PC but the bare drive would not even spin up.

Oh well - I checked and the drive itself is ineligible for an RMA and obviously I voided the warranty when I opened this up.
