That is, despite various "hard drive scrubber" software makers'
claims, the only Military Grade method of making a hard drive
unreadable.

For my part, when I dispose of a drive I just use one of the freeware
"scrubbers" and then reformat... Then I go online and change all my
important passwords. The likelihood of someone getting the drive and
putting the time/effort into recovering data at that point is pretty
slim and the only thing I really need to secure is access to my
financial matters.
