Mac so it sees the Linux drive as a local drive.

In theory that can be done, probably via samba.

Dude, these days, the Samba solution goes in like a dream with pretty much any modern Linux distro. Based on my Linux experiences, it wouldn't surprise me if the Samba client goes into the Mac like it's been greased, either. Not so sure about the Samba server daemon if you're putting it on a Mac.

On 100Base-T it'll be slower than the hard drive, but not agonizingly so. On GBLAN, it might even be faster than the hard drive, if the two computers are quick enough. Going between my 3.16 GHz Pentium D machine and my 1.8 GHz Celeron machine that serves files is faster than hitting the SATA-II 3Mbps drives in the Pentium D machine if anything else is using the local drives at the time.

I've got a virgin backup on an entirely different system than I do my
work on.

At the end of my load cycle, I've got everything on the hard drives of two machines, one a RAID 0+1 system, plus it's on two external drives. Over time, it'll end up in two more external drives as I rotate them around two additional locations. I mean, those are the negatives. Gotta take care of them. Then I copy them out to a "post" area and cull and edit. Then they go to the "gallery" area.
