I'll have to book my tickets around Christmas. Hope nothing changes
between then and June...
Still, I think it looks good from that article in the Charlotte
Observer. What with the Morton family still running the park and all.
Sounds like a deal to escape property taxes, if you ask me... :-)
Partly ... and perhaps partly it secures Hugh Morton's legacy.
The key for me is:
“Grandfather Mountain is protected for good, over and done, period,”
said the younger Morton, who is president of Grandfather Mountain Inc.
“That's the way it should be. Grandfather Mountain is too significant to
have any potential for anyone ever to ruin it.”
and
“There's a place for condos and carousels, but Grandfather Mountain is
not the place.”
I suspect they saw a future where rising land values and property taxes
could force them to have to sell out to developers, and they wanted to
get it into protected status while they could.
I think the old man would be right pleased.
It's the second private tourist attraction acquired by the State of NC
to preserve it from development. NC bought Chimney Rock last year.

I expect that's the same way NC will manage Grandfather Mountain. The
Morton family will be contracted to continue to run the park through a
non-profit corporation.
