I still believe its most likely due to currency fluctuations. What lenses getting 
rabates when, is probably just a function of when stock are getting refilled. The 
dollar is very high lately and this should be reflected in lower prices on recently 
imported items.  
Its nothing new this. A couple of years ago Pentax in the US reduced prices on the FA* 
24/2 and the FA* 85/1.4. That also triggered speculations of new lenses.

Yes, it could be. I just wouldn't hold my breath though.
