Speaking of digital for weddings, I photographed a
wedding shower last week - all digital. I brought out a
lot of 35mm gear, but after reviewing the first few
digital shots, I decided to stick with digital for the
rest of the occasion.
I accomplished some things with digital that film would
not allow. In real time, I emailed photos to relatives
in other countries so they could watch the festivities
almost as it happened. Then, at the end of the shower,
I gave the bride-to-be and her mother a CD (and a dupe
of it) with 82 photos, color corrected, sharpened, and
sized for a 17" monitor, all numbered and arranged for
a slide show.
I missed having a 24mm or a 200mm lens (my digital is
34-102/f2-2.5). I had a screw-on wide angle adapter,
but it's no substitute for a real wide angle lens. A
full-frame CCD K-mount camera (are you listening
Pentax?) and my own collection of Pentax lenses would
have solved the problem.
I was shooting and imaging as the shower progressed, so
I finished the whole project just a few minutes after
the shower ended. The slowest process was burning the
CD's - my CD burner required about ten minutes per CD.
Of course it helped that the shower was held in my
living room, and my computer was around the corner in
the den.
The bride's mother (my sweet wife) and the bride-to-be
(daughter number two) were both very pleased, so the
event was a success.
I'm not willing or able to take on weddings myself, but
a working pro should have no problem switching to
digital, at least for the candid photos.
