I agree with Cotty. You can do whatever you can get away with. The best
story I have along these lines was when I was photographing a suicide scene.
A man had jumped from a bridge. I wanted to photograph the body from the
bridge but the police had the area cordoned off. When I went up there to
take pictures, a young officer told me to move along. I gave him a lot of
B.S. about the rights of the free press, his supervisor, my rights, etc. So
he apologized and let me take my pictures.

Thing was, he was totally within his rights--the police in that municipality
do indeed have the authority to clear photographers from a crime scene at
their individual discretion, whether they're legitimate press or no.

On the other hand, be careful around construction sites, and photographing
at truck stops. People doing illegal things can be dangerous to people
taking pictures.
