The A* was OK, but it didn't live up to its great reputation. I much
preferred the A100/2.8 wrt sharpness, and it was easier to use for my
purposes as well.

I am also an ex-user of the A* 200/4 Macro who is now a current user of the
A 100/2.8 Macro. I am not knocking the A* 200/4 Macro, really - I just
find the A 100/2.8 Macro to simply be the nicest macro lens I've ever used
(and I've tried quite a few of 'em, and still own a few of 'em, too).

It may be butting in where not asked, but lenses around 100mm plus or minus, remind me of the only two I have there...

     Super-Multi-Coated Takumar, 105mm f/2.8 ~

An absolute gem of a lens. Bokeh is excellent, as is mid-range (f/5.6-8.0) sharpness. I love it! Not just small and light weight, but essentially brand new. No wear at all!

I had to have a K-mount version, so I picked up an:

     SMC Pentax-M 100mm f/2.8 ~

Something about the design, I guess, but this too has great bokeh, is identical to the A version thereof, and the sharpness just gets better and better, the more you stop it down. That IS what logic would lead you to believe, but is not true with most other lenses. It is with this one...
Quite a performer, yet another of my favorites...

I might start looking for an A 100/2.8 macro.
What better lens to complete the set?
