My husband likes his Tamron 24-135mm f3.5-5.6. It was almost $500.

I have the Sigma 28-105mm f/2.8-4. It's not wonderfully contrasty or
anything, but it's sharp enough. I think I paid $130 for it used at B&H;
new I believe it's $150. Mine lives on my istD and I really like it as a
general-use lens.
