Though it comes in many colors normally what we think of as gaffers tape is flat black. It is a form of duct tape, but of a much higher quality and has an adhesive on it that is more like masking tape and can be easily removed without leaving a residue (if it is not left on forever). It is also, unlike duct tape, light tight. The Permacel stuff is also supposed to be somewhat temperture insulating.

You can get it an most pro camera stores, stage supply houses, motion picture/video supply places, etc. B&H, Adorama, Calumet, etc. sell it. It is also fairly expensive.

BTW: most of what is sold as duct tape nowadays is more like a cheap, not light tight, gaffers tape. The real duct tape (what hot rodders call 200mph tape) has a permanent adhesive on it that will not come lose ever under fairly high temps, but to get that stuff anymore you pretty much have to go to a plumbing supply house. If your use it to hold your cars bodywork together it will pull the paint off when you try to remove it.

Remember, gaffers tape is the photographer's friend. A little piece will keep that wheel in its place when you want it to stay there.

You can med everything with gaffa, including broken hearts.

Gaffa tape is like The Force
 It has a light side
 And a dark side
And it holds the Universe together
