I've had problems with my Nikon D1h not turning on the monitor when
I hit the review button, and occasionally firing a frame that does not
expose, almost exactly like the *istD experience you mention.
  
Removing the battery and replacing it solves the problem.  The Nikon
seems to have a pretty intimate dialogue with its batteries, so it may
be fussier this way.
